Ethical Considerations in the Medicinal Use of Psychedelics

Julie Holland, MD

Abstract: Ethical considerations in the medicinal use of psychedelics in Western medicine will be explored, with particular attention to how government cooperation or obstruction affects vulnerable patient groups. Dr. Julie Holland is the editor of Ecstasy, The Complete Guide: A Comprehensive Look at the Risks and Benefits of MDMA and The Pot Book: A Complete Guide to Cannabis. Both are non-profit books that fund clinical research examining the therapeutic effects of Schedule I drugs. Dr. Holland is the medical monitor for several psychedelic studies, including a clinical trial examining the effectiveness of MDMA-assisted psychotherapy in the treatment of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in the veteran population, and another utilizing various strains of cannabis in treating this same burgeoning veteran patient population.

Julie Holland is the editor of two non-profit books which help to fund clinical research: Ecstasy: The Complete Guide, and The Pot Book: A Complete Guide to Cannabis, and author of Weekends at Bellevue: Nine Years on the Night Shift at the Psych ER. Dr. Holland runs a private practice in Manhattan and is the medical monitor for two clinical research studies on treating posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), one using MDMA-assisted psychotherapy and the other using cannabis.
